Entrepreneur and CEO Valerie Jennings Reviews Social Media Marketing, Branding & Website Traffic
Posted by: Micah Pratt
Here is a podcast from Valerie Jennings, entrepreneur and CEO of Jennings Social Media Marketing.
“Hi this is Valerie Jennings, CEO of Jennings Social Media Marketing. I want to offer a few tips about how you can use social media to protect your brand, build awareness on the Internet and drive traffic to websites like your blog or primary company website or even a landing page. Some of the things that we look at are competitor analysis reports, so that we can see how competitors are appearing on the Internet in comparison to some of our clients. Additionally, we try to make sure that we have all of the holes plugged as far as having a Twitter account, Facebook page and do they have their LinkedIn site set up properly. These are some simple things you can do as a business owner to make sure that you have all of your social networking sites reserved so that a competitor does not try to take the name or hijack your brand.”
Click below to listen to the rest of Jennings’ tips on how to use social media to protect your brand and drive website traffic.

Kraft Foods Pushes Facebook & Twitter Campaigns
Posted by: Micah Pratt
Two popular Kraft Food brands are increasing their social media marketing efforts with campaigns on Twitter and Facebook. Here is an article from nytimes.com, by Stuart Elliott, about Oreo cookies and Wheat Thins revamping their brands on social networking sites.
Food Brands Get Sociable on Facebook and Twitter
The number of advertisers with presences in the social media like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube are increasing faster than the lines at the supermarket when the values of the cents-off coupons are being tripled.
Now, two familiar brands of baked goods sold by Kraft Foods are stepping up their marketing efforts in social media.
One brand, Oreo cookies, is going to be giving its Facebook page a global look, effective on Monday. The other brand, Wheat Thins crackers, is starting a campaign to reward fans of the brand who discuss it on Twitter.
Oreo has been on Facebook since last August with a page that has been primarily American-oriented. But the many comments left on the page from other countries — reflecting that more than half the brand’s 5 million Facebook fans are from outside the United States — led to a rethinking of how Oreo is presented on the Web site.
“It was an ‘A-ha’ moment for us,” said Mark Clouse, senior vice president for global biscuits at Kraft Foods in Northfield, Ill., reflecting that the company understands Facebook “is now a global vehicle and a platform we can use to have a global dialog” with consumers.

This series is supported by Ben & Jerry’s Joe, Ben & Jerry’s new line-up of Fair Trade and frozen iced coffee drinks. Learn more about it here.

With social media growing at an ever increasing pace, there is now a wealth of data about how people interacting with one another on the web. Naturally, infographics have proven an excellent aid in expressing high volumes of social web information in a clear, visually appealing manner.
Here are 10 infographics that prove as beautiful as they are interesting.
1. Social Web Involvement
This is a global map of social web involvement which illustrates that hundreds of millions of web users are creating and sharing content every month. It provides a clear visualization of the ways in which social technologies are adopted differently across the world, showing the number of active bloggers, social networkers, video sharers, photo uploaders and microbloggers.
Interestingly, it reveals that despite the Twitter hype, microblogging is still not a mass social activity and is nowhere near the size and scale of blogging.
2. Social Marketing Compass
A compass is a device for orientating oneself and guiding physical direction. The social marketing compass points a brand in a physical and experimental direction, allowing them to connect with their customers, peers, and influencers, where those users already interact and seek guidance online.
Created to illustrate social marketing within the book Engage: The Complete Guide for Brands and Businesses to Build, Cultivate, and Measure Success in the New Web, this infographic was also available as a poster to celebrate the book’s pre-sale.

Six Ways to Manage International Relationships Online
Posted by: Micah Pratt
As the world becomes a more global place, businesses are increasingly building relationships with international clients, which can often be difficult. I would like to share an article from mashable.com about six ways to manage international relationships online.
6 Ways to Manage International Relationships Online
This post originally appeared on the American Express OPEN Forum, where Mashable regularly contributes articles about leveraging social media and technology in small business.
Sometimes the hardest part of having international clients is finding a way to connect with them. Small businesses often have to worry about different time zones, different languages, and even different customs and traditions.
While there’s no catch-all, golden resource that can solve every problem a small internationally-minded business could have, there are some easy ways to keep your business up-to-date and in the overseas loop.
Here, we’ll help you through the basic steps of interacting with overseas clients, from translating pleasantries to tracking shipments to making sure you don’t accidentally call them in the middle of the night.
1. Basic Information
Before you even get started, it’s important to know the basic information about your client’s country. Usually the most thorough and reliable way to bone up is through the country’s official webpage. England, for example, has a good site with lots of information. Unfortunately, most of these sites are geared towards tourism and less so the time-pressed businessperson.
Wikipedia can actually be a great, quick and comprehensive alternative. Wikipedia pages exist for most major countries and include a helpful info bar on the right side of the page (usually just below the country’s flag). This information includes official languages, government make up, population estimates, GDP, currency, time zone, and calling code.
Also check out The World Factbook, maintained by the CIA. It includes “information on the history, people, government, economy, geography, communications, transportation, military, and transnational issues for 266 world entities,” according to their website.

Facebook Posts to Appear in Real-Time Search Results
Posted by: Micah Pratt
I would like to share an article from mashable.com about how Facebook posts will now be available in real-time searches through OneRiot.
Facebook Posts to Appear in Real-Time Search Results
As of today, real-time results from millions of users’ Facebook posts will now appear in search results on OneRiot, one of the world’s leading real-time search engines.
These Facebook posts will also be accessible through OneRiot’s API, which powers more than 100 real-time apps around the web and on mobile devices.
OneRiot already pulls data from blogs, Twitter, Digg and millions of other sources all over the social web. Having access to Facebook’s nearly 500 million members, however, takes these search results to a higher plane by pooling a much larger dataset when finding and ranking links for search results.
Facebook data that will appear in OneRiot search results include publicly shared links on user profiles and publicly “liked” stories from all over the web. For example, a search for “World Cup” on OneRiot will reveal the most popular links about the soccer tournament being shared by Facebook users right now.

Starbucks joins an increasing list of brands and chains to offer free Wi-Fi in its stores. For example, last December, McDonald’s rolled out free Wi-Fi to nearly all of its restaurants across the country. Panera Bread also offers a similar program.
McDonald’s and Starbucks both have partnerships with AT&T, which, while often criticized for the quality of its wireless data network, is one of the largest Wi-Fi hotspot providers in the United States.
Starbucks was one of the first chains to offer Wi-Fi access to its patrons, first via an agreement with T-Mobile and then with AT&T. Starbucks visitors have been able to enjoy up to two hours of free Wi-Fi from their favorite coffee house, provided they are either an AT&T customer or they use a Starbucks Card to login. The new program will do away with any sort of registration, which will make those of us who always forget either our AT&T account information or can’t find our Starbucks cards extremely happy.

B2B Social Media Budgets to Increase to $54 Million by 2014
Posted by: Micah Pratt
Until recently, business to business companies have only minimally utilized social media marketing, but that is expected to change. Here is an article from emarketer.com that explains why business to business companies will likely increase their social media spending.
B2B Spending on Social Media to Explode
Despite social media marketing’s sizable popularity, business-to-business (B2B) companies are still fairly new to the discipline. According to a November 2009 survey from Business.com, 73% of B2B respondents who were using social media had less than two years of social media marketing experience.
But now that social media has caught on in the sector, spending forecasts suggest that big increases are coming.
“B2B participation in social media marketing is steadily increasing, and marketers are beginning to see opportunities to generate quality leads and position themselves as thought leaders in their industries,” said eMarketer’s Evelyn Jung, author of the new report “B2B Social Media Marketing Heats Up.”

Here is an article from mashable.com about the “Write the Future” ad, which set the record for most views of a viral video.
Nike’s “Write the Future” Ad Sets Viral Record [VIDEO]
Nike’s three-minute “Write the Future” epic, starring soccer superstars Didier Drogba, Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo, set a new record for most views of a viral video ad in its debut week, according to web video analytics company Visible Measures.
It beat the previous record holder, another Nike ad called “Earl and Tiger” featuring golfer Tiger Woods after his heavily publicized return to the sport.
Ad agency Wieden+Kennedy produced the ad, which was directed by illustrious Mexican filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu, who is best known for the critically-acclaimed film Babel. Nike VP Trevor Edwards was quoted in Advertising Age saying the ad is “among the best we’ve ever done.”

Wendy’s Frosty Gets a Social Media Infusion
By:Micah Pratt
I would like to share an article from Mashable.com, written by Jennifer Van Grove, about Wendy’s use of social media promotions and incentives, centered around the Frosty, to increase awareness of the brand. The campaign will consist of three Frosty themed initiatives that include a digital scavenger hunt, a charity event and a online scrapbook competition that will run throughout the summer.
Wendy’s Frosty Gets a Social Media Infusion
With summer around the corner, the Wendy’s fast food chain is releasing a slew of social media promotions and incentives centered around its iconic Frosty dessert treat.
The company will roll out three distinct social media promotions over the course of the summer that involve Twitter and Foursquare. Each endeavor, however, revolves around Facebook and the Frosty Facebook Page.
Wendy’s is also touching all corners of the social sphere with action-oriented contests for prizes and a fan-powered charity drive. It’s tit-for-tat marketing at its best, with social media designed to drive awareness around the brand and reward fan appreciation.

How Does Twitter’s New Social Good Initiative Stack Up?
Posted by: DeAnn Farha
I want to share an article from Mashable.com written by Geoff Livingston about Twitter’s Hope 140 application to raise awareness for non-profit organizations. Last week, #EndMalaria Campaign users participated by retweeting and donating $10 for World Malaria Day, through Hope 140 and TwitPay. Twitter chooses what non-profit organization will be able to use Hope 140. Organizations such as Room to Read and Partners in Health will be launching its Hope 140 through retweets, public announcements and donations.
How Does Twitter’s New Social Good Initiative Stack Up?
Last month saw the latest Twitter (Twitter) foray into social good efforts with the launch of the new Hope140 initiative. Its #EndMalaria campaign over the past week featured the TwitPay platform for donations, creating a new call to action for Hope140. Twitter users participated in World Malaria Day by retweeting and donating $10. The Case Foundation matched donations with a $25,000 grant.
#EndMalaria demonstrated that Twitter can be more than an awareness mechanism for non-profits. Further, Twitter is using its Promoted Tweets feature as public service vehicle, launching with two charities; Room to Read, which is campaigning to promote the building of their 10,000th library, and Partners in Health. Now Twitter’s non-profit offering provides comprehensive capabilities, from click-throughs and retweets to bona fide donations and public service announcements.

Twitter Announces New Tool to Embed Tweets
Posted By: Jared Cook
I want to share this Mashable.com article written by Adam Ostrow about how to embed a tweet.
As expected, Twitter has rolled out a new tool that lets you embed a tweet on a website. The feature –- which we confirmed was on its way on Monday –- replaces the need to take a screenshot and crop tweets, like we often do in blog posts when we want to quote someone via Twitter.
Using “Blackbird pie,” you can create an embeddable tweet by first entering the URL for the chosen message in the form that Twitter has created (that URL can be found using the timestamp on a tweet – i.e. –- where it says “3 hours ago”).
From there, click “Bake It,” and Blackbird will generate the code needed to embed the tweet on your website. Twitter notes when “you paste it into your site, the tweet will pick up some of your styling, e.g. the font-family you use on your p tags. That’s intentional!” Here’s what the end result looks like:

WordPress Founder Talks About the Platform’s Future [Video]
Posted by: DeAnn Farha
I want to share an article written by Julie O’Dell from Mashable.com about Matt Mullenwegm, founder of blogging software WordPress. The nonprofit WordPress Foundation plans to compete with Tumblr by offering free services such as PollDaddy, Akisment and buddyPress since the collapse of Ning.
WordPress Founder Talks About the Platform’s Future [VIDEO]
At WordCamp SF yesterday, we got to talk to WordPress founder Matt Mullenweg. He’s the man behind the Automattic empire, a collection of blogging software and complementary services, such as PollDaddy and the spam filtration system Akisment.
Mullenweg chatted with us about the demise of Ning and how buddyPress, his solution for communities, can help those folks who are left wondering about free alternatives. He also talked about how WordPress (WordPress) plans to compete with Tumblr (Tumblr), the status of the nonprofit WordPress Foundation, acquisition plans in 2010, WordPress’ focus on themes and even his favorite non-WordPress blogs.

Charitable Ways of Donating Used Electronics
Posted By: Maya Tao
I want to share an article written by Lauren Indvik from Mashable.com regarding ways of recycling used electronics. Every year, less than 20 percent of consumer electronics is collected in eco-friendly ways. Donations of used electronics are highly encouraged. Charitable recycling programs including Dell and Goodwill, the Wireless Foundation, Students Recycling Used Technology, Komputers 4 Kids and eBay Giving Work. However, a couple of steps are also recommended before taking the action, for example, clean the hard drive and donate supplementary materials.
5 Charities for Donating Your Old Electronics
Consumer electronics, a broad category that includes TVs, computers, audio devices, phones and other related devices, currently constitutes nearly 2% of the municipal solid waste stream and is steadily rising at a rate of 8% per year. According to the EPA, of the roughly 2.25 million tons of used and unwanted electronics each year, 18% is collected for recycling and roughly 82% winds up in landfills.
These are unfortunate statistics given the many useful and eco-friendly alternatives for disposing of your old electronics — not to mention tax breaks for consumers. We’ve highlighted a few of these options below, along with information about preparing your unwanted goods for donation.

Social Media Can Change The World Through Common Ground

I would like to share the words of JR Johnson with you all from his blog post on Mashable. I’m compassionate about the views he’s expressed, and I hope you find them beneficial as well.
Social Media Can Change The World Through Common Ground
November 15th, 2009 | by JR Johnson
J.R. Johnson is founder and CEO of Lunch.com, a user generated content platform focused on finding common ground, and host of the Lunch for Good event series.
There’s been a rising interest in the concept of “social media for social good.” In large part, that discussion has been focused on cause-related social good. I have a different take, related more to the greater good of humanity as a whole. To my view, the Internet, specifically social media, has the potential – and responsibility – to make the world more thoughtful and tolerant by showing people their shared common ground.
