The Royal Wedding Breaks Record for Live Streaming

Royal Wedding Breaks Live Streaming Records
The Royal Wedding has already taken over trending topics across the web, and we can now report that it has broken at least one record: concurrent viewers on Livestream.
The company says that its livestream of William and Kate’s wedding topped 300,000 concurrent viewers at 6 a.m. ET on Friday morning. CEO Max Haot tells us that he expects “at least 2 million” unique viewers by the time the broadcast is done. Livestream partnered with the Associated Press, UK Press Association, CBS and Entertainment Tonight for its coverage.
Akamai reports that the event broke broader live streaming records as well. A representative for the company — whose network hosts some of the web’s largest news sites — reports that “concurrent live streams of Royal Wedding on Akamai surpassed the 1.6M peak set by World Cup in June of 2010.”
However, the event does not appear to be the biggest news event in web history. While the 4.6 million page views per minute reported on the news sites Akamai delivers content for this morning surpass the total for Barack Obama’s presidential election victory, they fall well short of the 10.3 million page views per minute record set last June when a World Cup qualifying match and the longest Wimbledon match in history took place simultaneously.

Twitter Looks To Buy TweetDeck for $50 Million

Twitter has recently been in talks to buy TweetDeck, a third-party client of Twitter that allows users to connect with contacts across a variety of social networking sites including Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and more. According to an article by Chris Taylor on mashable.com, Twitter does not know the exact number of TweetDeck users, but believes it includes the most obsessive power users in social media.
Twitter In Talks To Buy TweetDeck [REPORT]
Twitter is in talks to purchase TweetDeck Inc. for $50 million, according to the Wall Street Journal.
TweetDeck is one of the most popular third-party Twitter clients, available in desktop, iPad, iPhone and Android versions. It displays your Twitter news feed, @mentions and direct messages, along with your Facebook feeds — all on the same screen, all updating in real time. TweetDeck can also support updates from MySpace, LinkedIn and Foursquare.
The 15-person company, based in the U.K., has never revealed how many users TweetDeck has. The number may be small — but it is also likely to include the most obsessive power users in social media.

Social Media Coupons and Promos Reach Audiences and attract “Followers” for Brands

More than half of consumers follow at least one brand on a social networking site. A new study shows that consumers chose to follow a brand in order to receive a deal or promo or to find more brand information. This article from InformationWeek.com was written by Alison Diana and it reveals the results of the new social media research.
Coupons, Promos Attract Social Media Brand ‘Followers’
The majority of consumers are willing to follow a brand on Facebook or Twitter — especially if there is a financial motivator such as coupons or special promotions, a new study found.
In fact, 60% of consumers polled follow at least one brand via a social network, and one in four said they did so in order to search for coupons or promotions, according to a poll of more than 15,000 residents of the United States and Canada by Empathica, a developer of customer experience management (CEM) solutions. Thirty percent cited their desire to seek more information on a brand, the study found.
“The challenge for companies is to identify the triggers that make consumers want to follow their brand, further engage with them and keep them top-of-mind,” said Gary Edwards, Empathica executive VP of client services. “Our survey results suggest consumers show preference to interacting with brands that offer coupons and promotions via social media outlets. It’s important for brands to recognize consumer preferences and what will help encourage them to visit an establishment.”

Twitter Tests New Analytics Product

A select group of Twitter users have tested the new Twitter Analytics product. This development has been rumored all year, but it is now official. Users will be able to see data about their account for free and in one central place. Here is an article from mashable.com by Adam Ostrow that shares the news.
Twitter’s Official Analytics Product Has Arrived
Twitter has started inviting a select group of users to test a new analytics product, Mashable has learned. Such a product has been rumored for some time, and a Twitter executive said earlier this year that Analytics would debut by the end of 2010.
With Twitter Analytics, users will be able to see a plethora of data about their account; for example, information about which tweets are most successful, which tweets caused people to unfollow, and who the most influential users are that reply and retweet their messages.
In the images below, you can see how some of this data is charted. A bar graph over 6-hour increments shows you mentions, follows and unfollows, for example, and you can filter tweets by categories that are defined as “best,” “good,” and “all.”

Non-Profit Social Networking Site To Launch
At the Social Good Summit held by Mashable and 92Y, Chris Hughes commented on the upcoming release of a new social network designed for non-profit organizations. Hughes, co-founder of Facebook, explained his passion for Jumo, the new network. Jumo will primarily exist to build relationships between people and non-profit organizations. He believes that giving begins with a relationship, and Jumo will help create these connections. Watch this video to learn more about the innovative social network that Hughes has planned.

New York Fashion Week kicked off Thursday, September 9, with more than 90 of the world’s best known and up-and-coming designers ready to display their Spring 2011 Collections.
It’s an exciting time for industry heavyweights and fashion lovers alike, as there have been some big changes to this year’s event. For the first time since 1993, Bryant Park will not be home to the glamorous white tents, as the runways are now located at Lincoln Center on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. What’s more, Fashion Week, now branded as Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, is embracing technology — keeping the event as innovative as the clothes gracing the runway.
The chaos and drama associated with fashion shows may be mitigated this year by Fashion GPS, a 6-year-old startup that is managing 184 shows during the event’s week long run. The company provides a hi-tech approach to managing registration, credentials, and seating systems and also offers real-time online invitations and RSVPs.
The digital checkin system means it’s going to be a lot harder bypass security if you’re not on the list. And while Fashion Week was moved to its new location to accommodate its expansion and grant access to more press, you, the fashion-minded civilian probably didn’t score an invite.

How Does Twitter’s New Social Good Initiative Stack Up?

I want to share an article from Mashable.com written by Geoff Livingston about Twitter’s Hope 140 application to raise awareness for non-profit organizations. Last week, #EndMalaria Campaign users participated by retweeting and donating $10 for World Malaria Day, through Hope 140 and TwitPay. Twitter chooses what non-profit organization will be able to use Hope 140. Organizations such as Room to Read and Partners in Health will be launching its Hope 140 through retweets, public announcements and donations.
How Does Twitter’s New Social Good Initiative Stack Up?
Last month saw the latest Twitter (Twitter) foray into social good efforts with the launch of the new Hope140 initiative. Its #EndMalaria campaign over the past week featured the TwitPay platform for donations, creating a new call to action for Hope140. Twitter users participated in World Malaria Day by retweeting and donating $10. The Case Foundation matched donations with a $25,000 grant.
#EndMalaria demonstrated that Twitter can be more than an awareness mechanism for non-profits. Further, Twitter is using its Promoted Tweets feature as public service vehicle, launching with two charities; Room to Read, which is campaigning to promote the building of their 10,000th library, and Partners in Health. Now Twitter’s non-profit offering provides comprehensive capabilities, from click-throughs and retweets to bona fide donations and public service announcements.

Twitter Announces New Tool to Embed Tweets

I want to share this Mashable.com article written by Adam Ostrow about how to embed a tweet.
As expected, Twitter has rolled out a new tool that lets you embed a tweet on a website. The feature –- which we confirmed was on its way on Monday –- replaces the need to take a screenshot and crop tweets, like we often do in blog posts when we want to quote someone via Twitter.
Using “Blackbird pie,” you can create an embeddable tweet by first entering the URL for the chosen message in the form that Twitter has created (that URL can be found using the timestamp on a tweet – i.e. –- where it says “3 hours ago”).
From there, click “Bake It,” and Blackbird will generate the code needed to embed the tweet on your website. Twitter notes when “you paste it into your site, the tweet will pick up some of your styling, e.g. the font-family you use on your p tags. That’s intentional!” Here’s what the end result looks like:

At WordCamp SF yesterday, we got to talk to WordPress founder Matt Mullenweg. He’s the man behind the Automattic empire, a collection of blogging software and complementary services, such as PollDaddy and the spam filtration system Akisment.
Mullenweg chatted with us about the demise of Ning and how buddyPress, his solution for communities, can help those folks who are left wondering about free alternatives. He also talked about how WordPress (WordPress) plans to compete with Tumblr (Tumblr), the status of the nonprofit WordPress Foundation, acquisition plans in 2010, WordPress’ focus on themes and even his favorite non-WordPress blogs.

LinkedIn Gives Users the Ability to Follow Companies

I would like to share an article by Ben Parr from mashable.com regarding the new following feature of LinkedIn. Users now can get automatic promotional and hiring updates from companies they follow, and they can also set up the frequencies as well as the types of information they would like to receive. Companies are expected to take the advantage of LinkedIn follow button to promote their profiles and seeking potential employees.
LinkedIn Gives Users the Ability to Follow Companies
LinkedIn has made it easier for users to connect with their favorites companies with the launch of “Follow Company,” a new feature that allows users to get notifications about activity happening from the companies they follow.
The new feature, which rolled out overnight, clearly takes cues from Facebook and Twitter — you can think of Follow Company as LinkedIn’s version of the Facebook Fan Page. However, instead of receiving status updates from the companies you follow, you will instead get information such as recent hires and promotions, new job opportunities and company profile updates.

AP Stylebook Finally Changes “website” to “website”
This might not mean much if you’re not writing or editing a tech blog, but news that the AP – whose stylebook is still the standard for all things grammar and punctuation in the news world — is officially changing “website” to “website” was met with a warm reception in our newsroom (and likely quite a few others) this afternoon.
We’d actually gone rogue on the issue ourselves several months ago, thinking that “website” was a rather antiquated way for describing “a computer connected to the internet that maintains a series of web pages on the World Wide Web.”

I want to share a mashable.com article written by Christina Warren that highlights how prevalent social media is becoming in various industries. This particular article focuses on musician Alicia Keys teaming up with monster.com to hire a blogger for her website.
Alicia Keys Uses Monster.com to Find New Blogger
Grammy Award-winning musician Alicia Keys is looking for a new blogger for her website IAAS.com (I Am Super) and she’s teaming up with Monster.com to find the right candidate. Monster.com will use its new 6Sense semantic search technology (shown off in the company’s Super Bowl ad) to help narrow the search down to the right candidate.
From April 6 through May 3, qualified candidates can submit their applications via this job listing. Then, Monster.com will use its technology to comb through the resumes, using semantic filters to efficiently separate the wheat from the chaff, so to speak.
At this point, a group of applicants will be asked to create videos and writing samples for IAAS.com, and those entries and videos will be on display for the public to offer their feedback as well. An advisory panel that includes Alicia Keys and her team, as well as executives from Monster.com, will then look at the applicants and the top 10 will be selected and flown to New York.
The top 3 candidates will then be given a final task: to blog about The Black Ball UK on May 27. By the end of June, the new Head Blogger will be announced and hired.

Social Media offers designers the chance to promote their own eco-friendly fashion lines, as well as share the green methods in which they create their garments. The social media sphere as a whole offers a place for the green advocacy movement to create awareness. The sustainable fashion is not just a trend, not just hippie potato sacks and Kumbaya, but instead a wearable, fashionable and profitable permanent niche within the overall fashion industry.

According to their mission statement, “Organic clothing, produced without toxic pesticides and dipped in low-impact dyes, is gaining popularity across the globe.
