Smart phones are becoming more and more popular and advertisers have begun using them as a tool to reach large audience with the use of applications. Here is an article from mashable.com about how people are welcoming advertising with smart phone applications.

This is especially true of advertisements that appear in apps. Of the roughly 1,000 smartphone users surveyed, 52% claim they have acted on an advertisement in an app and 18% have made a purchase directly from an ad in an app in the last month.

In addition, 53% said they were willing to share their location to receive more relevant advertising and a full 76% said they would prefer to download a free, advertising-supported app instead of paying an upfront fee for the same app.

This is great news for social gaming apps like Foursquare and Gowalla, which enable users to unlock special deals from advertisers based on their locations. It’s also great news for Apple, whose mobile app advertising platform, iAds, will debut this summer with the iPhone 4.0 OS.

Have you ever wondered how much time the average person spends on the Internet? And have you ever wondered how much of that time is spent on social networking sites? Thanks to Neilsen, we now know that people spend more time on sites such as Facebook and Twitter than on any other site. Here is an article from mashable.com by Adam Ostrow about the Neilsen findings.

boy Nielsen Study Reviews Social Networking Activity Social networking now eats up twice as much of our online time as any other activity. According to new stats from Nielsen, sites like Facebook and Twitter now account for 22.7% of time spent on the web; the next closest activity is online games, which make up 10.2%.

The stats also show the degree to which social networking is displacing other forms of communication, with e-mail as a percentage of online time plunging from 11.5% to 8.3% from June 2009 to June 2010. Instant messaging also saw a significant drop in share, with a 15% decline from last year.

However, e-mail use on mobile is still on the rise – from 37.4% to 41.6% — presumably as users continue to migrate to smartphones from feature phones.

Last Wednesday, Mark Zuckerberg sat down for a rare public interview with ABC News’ Diane Sawyer to discuss the continued success of Facebook along with the latest pressure it has faced. Facebook, the largest social networking site, recently hit a major milestone of 500 million users but along with fame has come issues dealing with privacy and a lawsuit that Zuckerberg sold a portion of the ownership in exchange for work in the early years of Facebook.

Kraft Foods Pushes Facebook & Twitter Campaigns

Two popular Kraft Food brands are increasing their social media marketing efforts with campaigns on Twitter and Facebook. Here is an article from nytimes.com, by Stuart Elliott, about Oreo cookies and Wheat Thins revamping their brands on social networking sites.

The number of advertisers with presences in the social media like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube are increasing faster than the lines at the supermarket when the values of the cents-off coupons are being tripled.

Now, two familiar brands of baked goods sold by Kraft Foods are stepping up their marketing efforts in social media.

One brand, Oreo cookies, is going to be giving its Facebook page a global look, effective on Monday. The other brand, Wheat Thins crackers, is starting a campaign to reward fans of the brand who discuss it on Twitter.

Oreo has been on Facebook since last August with a page that has been primarily American-oriented. But the many comments left on the page from other countries — reflecting that more than half the brand’s 5 million Facebook fans are from outside the United States — led to a rethinking of how Oreo is presented on the Web site.

“It was an ‘A-ha’ moment for us,” said Mark Clouse, senior vice president for global biscuits at Kraft Foods in Northfield, Ill., reflecting that the company understands Facebook “is now a global vehicle and a platform we can use to have a global dialog” with consumers.

In web search terms, this interest from searchers is nothing short of explosive.

Here are a few tips to improve search engine optimization, use social media marketing and increase sales opportunities:

1.       Improve search engine optimization (SEO) and create an online brand to attract businesses looking for your company via targeted keywords.  Run a Google keyword suggestions report and include tags, keywords and links which support sales.

2.       Increase SEO by driving traffic from Twitter, Facebook, blogging, LinkedIn and Videos, which will increase the type of industries coming to your site.  These keywords should complement the online sales system.

3.      Identify a clear call to action via Twitter, YouTube or LinkedIn such as driving traffic to the main website to increase email opt-ins.

It is obvious that most sales leads are contingent on a social media marketing strategy. While it is important to incorporate social media tools into the sales process, it is more critical to leverage SEO blog posts to maintain a relevant image via Google search.  I would advise the company to utilize an e-newsletter to continuously market to the company’s online audience and drive regular traffic from a e-newsletter to the primary website.

Grammy Award-winning musician Alicia Keys is looking for a new blogger for her website IAAS.com (I Am Super) and she’s teaming up with Monster.com to find the right candidate. Monster.com will use its new 6Sense semantic search technology (shown off in the company’s Super Bowl ad) to help narrow the search down to the right candidate.

From April 6 through May 3, qualified candidates can submit their applications via this job listing. Then, Monster.com will use its technology to comb through the resumes, using semantic filters to efficiently separate the wheat from the chaff, so to speak.

At this point, a group of applicants will be asked to create videos and writing samples for IAAS.com, and those entries and videos will be on display for the public to offer their feedback as well. An advisory panel that includes Alicia Keys and her team, as well as executives from Monster.com, will then look at the applicants and the top 10 will be selected and flown to New York.

The top 3 candidates will then be given a final task: to blog about The Black Ball UK on May 27. By the end of June, the new Head Blogger will be announced and hired.

Advertising is not a turnoff to people who love social media websites. In fact, many MySpace and Facebook users said ads on their favorite social sites have prompted them to buy something, according to a new report from Razorfish.

In its survey-based publication named “FEED: The Razorfish Consumer Experience Report,” the digital marketing agency says 76 percent of the 1,006 people surveyed said they didn’t mind seeing ads when they logged-in to Facebook, MySpace or the other social media sites they frequent. Razorfish also found that 40 percent of the respondents said they made purchases due to seeing those ads.

Hamptons Green Alliance Members Present HGA House Update to AIA Peconic Dinner Meeting

I would like share a story that Valerie Jennings, CEO of Jennings Social Media Marketing, was presented by Hamptons Green Alliance. The story focuses on the HGA presentation of housing development updates at the AIA Peconic Member Dinner Meeting in Southampton, NY.

Hamptons Green Alliance Members Present HGA House Update to AIA Peconic Dinner Meeting 

 Bridgehampton, NY – Members of the Hamptons Green Alliance (http://www.hamptonsgreenalliance.com), believed to be the first group of contractors who specialize in a variety of disciplines in the building industry to formally come together to share their expertise and promote sustainable building practices, recently presented their first project to members of the AIA Peconic Member Dinner Meeting in Southampton, NY.

The HGA project, which was announced last year, is a net zero energy, carbon neutral and LEED platinum house on Long Island. In what is believed to be a first in the Hamptons – if not the nation – this home is being rebuilt from the ashes of a horrific fire.

The presentation, which focused on the planning process for the HGA house project, which followed many of the concepts described in AIA new Integrated Project Delivery forms, also included reviews of the sustainable technologies used to attain the goals of the project as well as those that have been used to create energy in sustainable ways. There was a discussion of how thin film photovoltaic creates electricity with less impact on aesthetics, and a review of the status of residential windmills for this project. Other sustainable technologies required to meet the project’s goals were discussed such as low flow plumbing fixtures, smart home electronic technology, improvement of soil composition organically and reviews of materials to reduce the home’s carbon footprint.

All founding members of the Hamptons Green Alliance were on hand to field questions concerning the technologies that each has brought to the project.

The group, working with the Long Island Chapter of the United States Green Building Council, intends to seek LEED Certified Platinum status for the house, as well as implement a methodology developed by Frank Dalene, president of Telemark, Inc. and a founding member of the Hamptons Green Alliance. In addition to the presentation on the HGA House, Mr. Dalene also presented information on ICEMAN, a mathematical formula that scientifically determines the carbon footprint of any manufactured product.
